Unbalance of Terror

John Byrne's final story arc in his Romulans tales based around the classic "Balance of Terror" episode arrive in September, STAR TREK: ROMULANS: SCHISM. I've already shown issue 1's cover here before, but here now are issues 1-3, with rotating leads on each cover.

Cool!...what about some new Next Men too?

We (including JB) would like to do it, it's just a tough marketplace right now for that kind of book. But still hopefully someday.

Chris, could you expand on what you mean by it being a tough marketplace for a book like Next Men?

I am certain it would easily sell more than even what the Star Trek he is currently doing. If it sold as much as Crew has for instance, would that be enough?

Why are you certain of this? It wouldn't. If it would, we'd do it. Just too hard a sell in this economy, where even established creators and titles have a hard time now.

Well my reasons for being certain are these.

Next Men has a built in readership. For well over a decade now I've been waiting for new Next Men stories and I am not alone. Time and again it tops lists by his fans of books they wish he was working on. You only have to look to the two Compleat Next Men volumes put out to see the interest people have.

The work John has done on Angel/Star Trek has created new fans who previously had never followed his work. Having loved what he is doing with those properties, a significant number would want to read anything he puts out.

Crew is selling around 10 thousand issues I think I read? If you say that Next Men needs to sell like that to do it then I repeat, I'm certain it would easily do that.

Fans of it from the past alone can do those number or close to it. Add even a quarter of the new Trek fans or those reading his work on Angel and it's like printing money.

If I'm totally wrong and Next Men only sells 75% of Crew, that's still more than a bunch of books do.

I know you won't say what the minimum sales would have to be because it's none of our business but if you could at least give a range or point to another book's sales, at least then we'd know what numbers Next Men would need to strive for.

A 5-6 part new Next Men story in 2010 would be huge!

Thanks for the answer, Mr.Ryall. I guess this means the new Compleat editions didn't sell enough to warrant a follow-up. Too bad for us fans - it sure would have been fun to read Mr.Byrne's conclusion to the Next Men story.

Is there a chance that Byrne's stories focusing on the Romulans will be bundled and sold as a trade paperback collection?

Yep, and with a bonus adaptation of "The Balance of Terror" episode in the TPB, too. Coming next spring.
