Bringing "Balance" to the Force

As I was reading through the script and looking at the art for the first issue of John Byrne's upcoming comic STAR TREK: LEONARD McCOY, FRONTIER DOCTOR series (4 issues, spring 2010), it occurred to me that there's one other bit of Byrne TREK that hasn't really been talked up much yet.

When Byrne's assorted STAR TREK Romulans comics (the original Alien Spotlight issue, plus the two-part Hollow Crown and the three-part Schism miniseries) are collected into a TPB in early 2010, there will be an added bonus in the collection--a 12-page adaptation of the episode that links all of these stories together, "Balance of Terror" (as told from the Romulan P.O.V.). Page one of this extra story is shown here, with colors by "Schism" colorist, Lovern Kindzierski.

So is that the actual title of the miniseries, or is it disguising the real title a la Blue Harvest?

Byrne has posted some art from teh Dr. McCoy series - faces look unfinished and some backgrounds are sparse but the main complaint is that he is using HIS OWN FACE as a model for the bearded Dr. McCoy...what an ego on Byrne!! Terrible...

No, he's not. It's a perfectly good DeForest Kelley likeness. What Byrne meant by "my own face" was that there wasn't a lot of reference to work with, so he had to find his own "design" for it. He's not remotely drawing his own face.

Yes he is. He said so himself. And those backgrounds, extremely sparse.

I just wish he would finish the faces.

He also is tracing William Shatner's face, which is unprofessional.

Shatner heard about this and is thinking of kicking Byrne's ass. That's what he said on his Twitter account.

His old stuff was better. Byrne is just churning it out these days, everything looks so rushed.

Does anyone else appreciate the irony that Byrne started his career in licenced books, took off, crashed, lost sales and fans and respect and is now back to doing licenced books..LOL!

HOW CAN HE GET AWAY WITH THIS?

WHY ARE WE SHOUTING?? :-p

Anyhoo.... Byrne's a good solid writer and artist. Not extraordinarily epic, not terribly bad, just reliably enjoyable.

The Dr. McCoy mini-series is great news!

This on Bryne's own website about the whole "his face" controversy:

(To derail the Idiot Squad before they even get started, no, this does not mean I am using myself as the model. It means I developed a face that looks enough like Kelley/McCoy to pass, but does not require constant reference to photos.)

Cool blog as for me. I'd like to read a bit more concerning that theme.
